Bill (William) Summerskill is a senior executive editor at The Lancet. He is based in London and is active in all aspects of the journal, from peer-review to writing editorials. In particular, he oversees the research content. Bill is a strong advocate of clinical research in Asia and helped to establish the journal’s presence in the region and open its office in Beijing. He has visited clinicians in Hong Kong and throughout Asia to support research and coordinate Lancet themed-issues on health care in China, Southeast Asia, and Japan; one of which was launched in Hong Kong.
Dr. Summerskill’s clinical background is in primary care, during which time he was affiliated with the University of Bristol (UK). He is a former senior fellow of the University of Oxford’s Centre for Evidence-based Medicine and has worked with various groups including CONSORT, Cochrane Collaboration, US Food and Drug Administration, and WHO to improve the quality of research design, reporting, and relevance to developing countries; as well to improve the translation of findings into practice. In 2013 he was awarded the Richard Yu medal.
Through novel insights and applications of regenerative medicine, the Dr Li Dak-Sum Research Centre aims to push back the frontiers of medical science, and in doing so, to build synergistic international collaborations that advance health. Peer-reviewed publication will be an integral metric of the centre’s success. In the competitive world of publication, it can be as valuable for researchers to understand journals, as it is for editors to understand research. This presentation will explain how priorities are set and manuscripts selected at The Lancet family of journals. Moreover, it will show how editors translate our commitment to “the best science for better lives” into action in publishing, science, and society.
